Outdoor Electrical Enclosure

Why I use this

Plastic “weatherproof” boxes fail two ways at a Shreveport gate: they get water in the seams, or they never get water in and the electronics cook. Steel + thermostat fan fixes both for most of our Access and camera stacks. I mount these on poles with the cameras and antenna so service is one clean column — not a pile of gear in the weeds. If you’re DIYing, drill for cable glands, keep intakes clear of mulch, and set the thermostat so the fan actually kicks before mid-day heat soaks the metal.

Keep the brains cool at the driveway

Gate openers, UniFi Access hubs, PoE switches, and camera gear hate Louisiana summers. A sealed plastic box in full sun turns into an oven. This outdoor electrical enclosure is the steel cabinet we reach for when the electronics have to live on a pole or the fence line: rain-tight, dust-tight (IP65), and vented with a thermostat-controlled fan so heat gets pulled out instead of baking the boards.

What you’re getting

  • ~19.6″ × 15.7″ × 7.9″ cold-rolled steel cabinet (size linked on Amazon)
  • Thermostat + cooling fan — intake low, exhaust out; fan runs when the box heats up
  • IP65 hinged door with seals, insect screens, and rain-friendly ventilation
  • Removable back panel for mounting DIN rail, hubs, power supplies, and cable glands
  • Wall or pole mount hardware (stainless fasteners/hoops in the kit)

How we use it on gate jobs

Typical stack: Access Gate Hub or door controller, a small PoE switch, power for locks/actuators, and sometimes a cellular or wireless bridge — all inside one clean enclosure on the gooseneck or pole, not a tangle of plastic boxes on the ground. Pair it with outside cameras and an intercom at the entry and the “brains” stay serviceable without cooking.

Good fit / not a fit

  • Good: outdoor gate controllers, UniFi Access/Protect gear at the entry, solar sites that still need a ventilated cabinet for electronics
  • Size up: big dual-gate boards, large battery banks, or lots of DIN gear — get a deeper/taller cabinet
  • Not a substitute for: UL-listed fire/security cabinets when the AHJ or the opener maker requires a listed enclosure — follow the manufacturer and local code
